The active flavanoid in citrus, activates the phosphorylation of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS), the key enzyme for Nitric Oxide (NO) synthesis. Consequently, NO is increased having a beneficial effect on the endothelium by promoting vasodilation and therefore increasing blood flow. Furthermore, this flavonoid enhances ATP production at the mitochondrial level due to a blockage of proton leakage and a subsequent increased efficiency of oxygen usage. This improves the respiration capacity of the mitochondria resulting in more ATP production and is responsible for the ability of an increased power output as found in the clinical study.
Firstly, Pomegranates are a potent source of polyphenols and a good source of nitrate. Polyphenols also increase the activity and expression of eNOS, inducing more NO production . Therefore, pomegranates contribute to the ability of the blood vessels to adapt to their environment by increasing blood flow when necessary. Secondly, pomegranates nitrate source and increased production of NO occurs through the NOS-independent pathway, whereby circulating nitrate is reduced to nitrite by bacteria in the mouth and enters the systemic circulation which is further reduced to NO in the blood and tissues. This pathway plays an important role in NO formation during exercise.
It is a synergy of two energy systems - anaerobic and aerobic to kick start and give you immediate power and additionally to give sustained aerobic energy for endurance and long term activities. The dual action increases NO production and then efficiently uses oxygen in the mitochondria, leading to better performance during activity and increased peak force output.
